On August 7, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned Japan and the United States of their actions escalating tensions.
Japan and the United States recently (from July 19 to 26 -ed) held joint military exercises (Orient Shield -ed) on the island of Hokkaido, not far from the Russian border, further escalating the atmosphere of confrontation.
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed that Russia would not tolerate military provocations in the border area and would adopt countermeasures to protect its sovereignty.
